I recently celebrated the anniversary of the attack in Iraq that left me “permanently and totally disabled.” Someone commented that they were not sure whether to be happy about my celebration or not… To the casual observer it might be difficult to understand, but I was extremely happy about it. Every day is a victory as far as I’m concerned, not just because I survived thatday, but because of the things that have happened as a result. I have developed a perspective that would not have been possible before. I have developed and/or strengthened relationships in ways that were not possible before, either. It is incredible, and I owe it to the opportunity that God sent my way.
The simplistic view is, “you have to take the good with the bad,” but it is very true. You often have to do a lot of searching to find it, but it is there. As a result, I don’t celebrate the event. Rather, I celebrate the outcomes as a result of the event. When you think back on painful or traumatic events in your life, I am sure you can find them as well.
